Gratitude is gotten from a Latin word “gratus” meaning “thankful, pleasing”.
It is the sincere appreciation shown for an act done. Sincerity is the key word here. It is not enough to say a routine “thank-you”, your gratitude should be sincere and come from the heart.
Highly contagious is the gift of gratitude! A thankful heart is one that is so rich. It is like a seed sown which produces a bountiful harvest. Count your blessings and notice simple pleasures. Focus on finding whatever is good in every situation you find yourself in and you will start to notice the fullness of your life with gratitude, which is a soul-nurturing feeling.
Consciously think of things, people and experiences that you are grateful for. How many times do you remember to be thankful or appreciative to those around you?
When was the last time you told your spouse, friends or kids how much they mean to you? Do not assume they know. Verbalize it!
Thankfulness turns your life around. This was further emphasized in the words of Gerald Good when he said and I quote, “if you want to turn your life around, try thankfulness. It will change your life mightily”. Strive to be effortlessly grateful. The practice of gratefulness raises the level of one’s happiness irrespective of negative situations around.
Notice and appreciate the gift of each day. Start to find joy in the little things that seemingly do not matter. Do not wait for the big moments! A quote from Buddha comes to mind, “let us rise up and be thankful, for if we did not learn a lot today, at least we learnt a little, and if we did not learn a little, at least we did not get sick, and even if we got sick, at least we did not die; so let us be thankful”.
Everyday you are alive is a mighty reason to be grateful to God. Many would give anything to be you at this moment-only thing is they are currently six feet down the earth! If that is not enough reason to be thankful, I do not know what else is.
Write down five things each day you are thankful for, no matter how little. Gratitude should be an everyday outfit and not a one-time attire. Once it is worn everyday, it opens up doors of freedom, love and immense happiness. Howes calls us to remember that “life is better if you develop an attitude of gratitude”.
