Natural disaster is as old as man and in most situations.. inevitable. these natural disasters may include flooding, mudslide , landslide, earthquake and hurricane.. etc. natural disaster have plagued very many nations of the world today.. even the most developed nations have come to accept it that it is unavoidable because they are caused as a result of the earth trying to annul itself to changes/man’s activities on the earth. some of these natural disasters are peculiar to some nations. take for instance hurricane and flooding ..united states of America ,mudslide and landslide ..china, earthquake. south America, flooding ..Asia (Thailand, Vietnam Cambodia ).
Most recently, flooding happened in Nigeria. in the earlier part of this year, NIMET, the monitoring agency in charge of monitoring and informing us on weather and climatic changes and conditions informed us about on flooding and increased volume of water in our rivers and also advised the government to seek preventive and control measures so as to minimize the loss of lives and properties. the nonchalant attitude of our government ensured that we do nothing to prepare for it and also warn Nigerians living in the coastal areas and riverine communities.
The coming of the rains which farmers see as a blessing and sign of good fortune became more than that…with flood taking over their farmlands and houses.. turning them into refugees in their own country. many people living in these communities have been relocated to make-shift camps set up by the government .the government finds it a lot more convenient to roll out money for compensation than to take measures to prevent and minimize occurring hazards
Recently, people in this make-shift camps in the flood affect states ..Delta, Benue , Kogi have been robbed and dispossessed of their valuables they were able to salvage from this flood by armed gunmen. last week ,women in a make-shift camp in Benue state claimed to have been raped…the number of this rape victims climbing as high as 19 women.
-Does this mean that there is no form of security in this camps ?
Also, there have been a rumor circulating that some people explore this present situation at hand to collect relief matierials even when they were not affected by flood for their selfish desires most especially rice commodity..Packaging them in smaller bag 25kg (mama gold) to be sold in the market .
-Must Nigerians condescend so low by explore every situation to make a little profit for themselves ?? This brings the question to mind..2012 rainy season.. a blessing or not??
The Nigerian Environmental Management Agency (NEMA) should look into this claims to ensure that the flood victims should be the beneficiary to this relief materials rather than otherwise and also security measures should be enforced in these camps to protect this vulnerable Nigerians in order to ensure that their safety and welfare is guaranteed…..a word they say is enough for the wise.
