Agodi Refuse: The Growing Environmental Hazard in Oyo Secretariat

Waste is an unwanted material or materials that we generate everyday from foods, materials, items and other things used or consumed by human, including some domestic animals or pets. But the management of waste has been a global issue, particularly in African continent, most especially in Nigeria.

 Everybody regardless of status and geographical locations almost on daily basis generate waste in Oyo State, particularly in Agodi area, where the Oyo State government secretariat is situated. But what has become worrisome is the management and evacuation of the growing waste, a development which has raised concern about the health and well being of the people around this area.

 From this perspective, it has become imperative to address the crucial issues, which are evolving from the challenges of waste disposal and management by the ministry of environment, saddled with the responsibility of tackling waste related matters in the state.

It is no longer news that putrid smell from decaying waste in bins, scattered all over the premises of the secretariat and its environs has been emitting offensive odour within the areas, just as residents and civil servants are beginning to feel much more uncomfortable over the development.

 Apart from pollution, which is believed to be greatest menace associated with poor and ineffective waste management in Agodi, the spilling of waste materials from overwhelmed refuse dumps and bin has also caused traffic congestion along roads and streets, thereby impeding free movement of vehicles and pedestrians in the affected areas. Coming out from the various dumps around the Agodi area that has been leading to Air pollution with the area, because the waste bin has filled up to the extent that this refuse has been  blocking the federal government roads, that has lead to a serious traffics in the area of Agodi gate of Ibadan, the civil servant find it difficult to meet up with their time of resumption to their day to day activities by this traffics caused by this unclear refused;

The unclear refuse has caused fertile breeding ground  for bacteria and other diseases to the n people residing  around the Agodi gate ,This unclear refuse has become an health hazard to the people living around the area and the civil servant working around the area, not only the people living around the  area will be affected by this offensive odor ,including the people coming to the secretariat for official transaction in the government house, this unclear refuse is also dangerous to the general public .

This unclear refuse has been   a negative hazard to the environment in which people staying around the area are not enjoying themselves , by this unwanted odour coming out from the waste bin, The bin has filled up to extent that, the drainage cannot flow very well which is very dangerous  to the lives and properties of the people living around the area.

This unwanted odour   has even affect the Air, which people breath in and out, that can easily leads to death .

Finally this abandoned refuse makes a mockery of our claims to be the model city of the west, they are an eyesore and it would be a shame to conduct a visitor from another part of the country visiting the state for the first time to the area where they are so to be encouraged

Pleading has been going to the ministry of works and ministry of environment to take effective action on this issue , the lives of the citizen should be put into consideration, the properties should also be consider as well, because during the rainy season , the people around the area might suffer from, floods, as the refuse has blocked the drainage the water flows, which can  lead to the loss of life of many citizen, has it been saying cleanliness near to the godness
