Although fire outbreaks can occur any time irrespective of the weather, they are more common during harmattan. Many factors are responsible for this as the season is associated with cold dry wind, making grasses and other objects vulnerable to fire. As a result, this period has come with its negative effects, such as losses of lives and property.
What is glaring is that although the weather is susceptible to such, human factors contribute to over 90 percent of fire outbreak occurrences during this period. A majority of bush burning are caused by human beings in the guise of hunting and farming. In the case of farming, many would ignite fire in a bush without demarcating the limits the fire would burn, in the process causing dangers to human lives and property. Some, while hunting, flagrantly set fire on a bush to catch games. This act accounts for many fire outbreaks, with the culprits always going scot-free.
Fire incidents also occur at various homes and offices due to human factors. The incessant calls by fire experts for households to switch off their electrical appliances seem yet to be heeded due to carelessness. The call for regulated uses of gas cylinders has also not been hearkened to. Many people still keep these high-flaming gadgets inside their rooms and kitchens. The implication is that in a heated environment, these gadgets can explode, causing unquantifiable damage.
Calls by fire experts for acquisition of fire extinguishers at homes, offices and vehicles are also not taken seriously by the people. These gadgets, which are affordable and not too hard to operate, serve a first aid at a time of fire emergencies. When used promptly and correctly, it can avert calamitous moments. Households are advised to acquire them and also educate the inmates on their correct applications.
Again, there is the need for proper town planning implementations. Many a time, there could be fire incidents, especially at markets, and fire fighting personnel find it very difficult to access the spots for interventions. This makes the situation helpless, and leaves the fate of the victims and others in the air. This calls on town planning authorities to ensure strict adherence to the standard rules. In a similar vein, emergency numbers of fire fighting authorities should be at the beck and call of everybody. This will enable quick interventions in time of emergencies.
