The 8th African Women Championship came to an end on Sunday evening with host Equatorial Guinea emerging as winners. The tournament that started a fortnight ago came to an exciting summary at the Malabo Stadium. The Central Africans defeated South Africa 4-0 to lift the trophy for the second time in their history.
It worthy to note that the Equatorial Guineans finished the tourney without conceding a goal and had beaten the BayanaBayana 1-0 in the group stages. They beat Cameroon 2-0 in the semifinals. It is the second time they are hosting the tournament and also winning it.
The Equatorial Guinean ladies have grown in leaps and bounds since they defeated same South Africa to lift the trophy in 2008 in the same stadium.
Meanwhile, Nigeria lost the third place match 1-0 to the Lioness of Cameroon. The Falcons who were defeated 1-0 by South Africa for the first time in competitive history some days ago were a shadow of the team that ran riot over Africa.
This Nigerian side had defeated Cameroon 2-1 in their opening group game of the championship but could do nothing to prevent defeat. This is the first time the Super Falcons would not win a medal in the African Women Championship. Nigeria has won the trophy 6 times and came 3rd in 2008.
It was a disappointing outing for the KadiriIkhana led Falcons. Losing to South Africa was surprising with everybody looking up to the Equatorial Guineans as the only real opponents in the tourney. The return of veterans Perpetua Nkwocha and Stella Mbachu couldn’t save the day.
