Fear Of Ebola: Catholic Church Suspends ‘Sign Of Peace’, While Anglican Primate Suspend Handshake

 

As the fear of the Spread of Ebola across Nigeria especially in Lagos, Catholic Churches in Lagos suspended the ‘sign of peace’ where the congregation shake hands during mass. Meanwhile some Anglican churches have also suspended handshakes during communion.

 
A statement was released yesterday by the Archbishop of Lagos, Adewale Martin, saying that while the handshakes have been suspended, Catholic priest should continue the traditional hand to mouth method of given communion for now, but also asked the priest to make sure their hands don’t touch the tongues of the Communicants. He said Holy Water bowls usually placed at the entrance at the churches should be discontinued so as to contain the spread of the virus.

The Primate of the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh today suspended the shaking of hands during the exchange of the peace. He also went ahead to suspend the age long mouth method of administering communion. He noted that this is aimed at preventing the spread of the disease through physical contact.
