The Flamingoes, on Thursday 4th October, 2012, crashed out of the FIFA U-17 Women World Cup holding in Azerbaijan.
The Nigeria girls, one of the two African teams that qualified from the group stages, lost on penalties 3-5 to France. The game which ended goalless in 90 minutes and extra time had to be decided with the penalty shoot-outs. The Flamingoes were below par as their French counterpart outplayed them all through the match. The West Africans finished the game with 10 girls after the captain of the Flamingoes Adielomon got the second red card of the tournament after her second yellow card of the game in the 74th minute.
In football fairness, the better side won and our Flamingoes couldn’t fly. After raising the hopes of Nigerians back home with that 11-0 thrashing of host, Azerbaijan, they would be classifiedas disappointing. With some doubting the ages of some players, I won’t be surprised none makes the super Falcons team. ChiwenduIhezuo is my standout player but the team was disappointing.
The other African team left in Azerbaijan, Ghana, gave a good account of themselves and brought smiles to the African continent as they defied the odds in defeating Japan 1-0. The black maidens scored in the 53rd minute thanks to SherifatuSumalia after a goal keeping error. The Ghanaians are now the only African side to progress to the semis in the FIFA U-17 WWC.
It is worthy to note that the highest scoring sides are out of the tournament.Japan has scored 17 goals in Azerbaijan and was yet to concede any goal before they played Japan. They now hold the record of playing 354minutes without conceding a goal. Nigeria, the second highest scoring team, scored 15 goals and conceded 2.
In the other quarter final matches, North Korea defeated Canada 2-1, while Germany edged Brazil with same scores. Ghana will take on France, while Germany will slug it out with North Korea on Monday 9th October, 2012.
