No fewer than 100 persons died at Okogbe Community in Ahoada West Local Government Council of Rivers State when a tanker transporting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), while trying to avoid an on-coming Toyota Corolla at a bad section of the East-West Road suddenly lost control, fell down and spewed its contents, which volume reached waist level and flowed like a stream. The news soon spread and the community immediately thronged the scene with jerry cans and started scooping the spilled products, fire suddenly engulfed those around the spilled products. Speaking on the issue, the Commissioner of Health for Rivers State, Dr. Sampson Parker, said he has so far counted over 200 corpses. In his words, ‘ I will describe this as the single worst incident that has happened in Rivers State since the Civil War and this is a National disaster’. The sector commander of FRSC for Rivers State, Dr. Kayode Olagunju, however said 93 persons have been confirmed dead.
