When the arsenal rolled out their cannons at the Madejski stadium against Reading, they didn’t know what was to befall them.
In less than 40 minutes, the Arsenal was down 4-0. Sloppy play, bad defending, ordinary goal keeping gave Reading the impetus to bombard Arsenal. A Jason Roberts volley, Laurent Koscielny’s own goal, MikeleLeigertwood’s strike and Noel Hunt’s header had put the Royals ahead.
The gunners captained by Djourou gave themselves a life line when Arshavin intercepted a pass to play through to Walcott who chipped the goalie to bring the score to 4-1 in added time of the first half.
Arsenal turned things around in the second half with the introduction of Eisfeld and Giroud with the latter nodding in to make it 4-2. Koscielny redeemed his image by making it 4-3 in 89 minutes before Walcott made it 4-4 in the 95th minute. The game progressed to extra time.
Forgotten Moroccan, Chamakh scored a double in extra timeon both sides of Theo Walcott’s third goal to end the game 7-5. PavelPogrebnyak had equalized for Reading to make it 5-5.
In the other epic of the mid-week, Chelsea came from behind to win Manchester United 5-4 gaining revenge of their 2-3 loss to the Red Devils on Sunday. The game had ended 3-3 in regulation after 93rd minute equalizer from the spot by Hazard took the game to extras.
United had taken the lead within 25 minutes when Ryan Giggs capitalized on a defensive error to slot the opener. Luiz scored a penalty within the next 8 minutes after Buttner had brought Chelsea’s Victor Moses down in the box. The defensive calamities continued as Javier Heernandez made it 2-1 for United on the stroke of halftime.
Cahill leveled for Chelsea after the half but Nani chipped Cech to bring United back to the lead at 3-2 before Hazard’s added time equalizer.
In extra time, Sturridge gave the Blues the lead for the first time in the game after another defensive error from United. Ramires made it 5-3 after Hazard had whizzed past the Uniteddefence.Giggs last minute penalty wasn’t enough as Chelsea won 5-4.
In other results, Cup holders, Liverpool were knocked out by Swansea 3-1 at Anfield; Norwich came from behind to defeat Tottenham 2-1 in the last 6 minutes of their game; Aston Villa won away 3-2 to Swindon. 3 other Premeir League teams were knocked out by lower division teams: Leeds defeated Southampton 3-0, Sunderland lost 1-0 to Middlesborough and Bradford defeated Wigan 4-2 away on penalties after the game had ended goalless.
The quarter finalists are Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bradford, Chelsea, Middlesborough, Norwich, Southampton and Sunderland.
