Sore throats which are offshoots of cough, catarrh and common cold (flu) can be a constant source of frustration and irritation. I just suffered from one two weeks ago and didn’t find it in anyway funny. With the dust that seem to have taken its permanent residence in the air which we inevitably breathe in, sore throats are becoming quite common this harmattan season. But not to worry, I bring you some tips for caring for loved ones who have developed itchy throats. Here you go:
Pamper them: The best treatment to any illness is not medication. It is love, care and attention. Research has it that sick people whose friends and relatives visit them in hospital recover faster than those who didn’t have anyone at their bedside. Pamper your loved ones by speaking kind words to them, spoon-feeding them, tucking them in bed and reading bedtime stories to them while they rest. This will always make them feel better.
Soothe with soup: Of course, this is no time to feed them lumpy, heavy foods like pounded yam, cassava pudding, semovita and what have you. Rather, pureed, mushy foods like pap, custard, cereal, etc., should be served. Hot soups are also great so you can serve home-made chicken soup, mushroom soup and pepper soup. This will definitely soothe the scratchy throats.
Run a warm bath: Treat them to a warm bath. You might want to add soothing scents or bath fruits with sweet fragrances to help them feel better.
Medications: Make them take tranquilizers to ease the fever, aches and pains.
Serve them plenty of fluids: A cup of hot tea, a glass of warm milk, a can of orange juice and lots of water is needed now more than ever to keep loved ones hydrated. However, you must ensure that these liquids are not cold.
Replenish with Vitamin C: Vitamin C works wonders for catarrh and sore throats. Pop a lozenge of Vitamin C or a bar of Vicks plus Vitamin C into your loved one’s mouth every now and then. With all of these days, you can be sure that in no time at all, your loved one will bubble back to health.
