Every facet to the human struggle towards the sommum bonum of life is interwoven into a complex gridlock of binarisms; to live or to die, to be happy or to be in despair, to commend or to critique, to be content or to aspire, put it directly, ‘to persist or to change’. This binarisms are the rainbow that had colored the pages of human history however gory it appears, this binarisms constitute the bifurcating measures of human categorisation namely into the right conservatives and the left radicals.
Rationality, the sole exclusive claim of human over other living species founds expression in this binaric categorisation with each units of the binaries claiming the exclusive power to the sceptre of rationality, the conservatives and the radicals alike. Heretofore, this exclusive claim to rationality has been a potent strategem of seduction employed however unconsciously by these opposite extremes to sway disciples, dominate and command the status quo.
The conservatives who shares a negative impression to change tends to arrogate insanity to the radical leftists, they exhume and scoff the bizzare and perils associated with the adventures which the radicals continue to chorus in their happy-go-lucky mannerism. Using such recurgitated or envisioned perils as a template, the conservatives tries to quell the wild-fire-like spirit of radicalism. Traditions are adviced to be hallowed and worshiped, Novelty is chided, in the process honour is reputed to the apparent ignoble and vice versa, injustice are rationalized on the alter of idealism, the past is revered ‘the golden age’. A system is affirmed the sacred norm, people are enjoined to enjoy the relics of the past to frame a happy romance with the present, thus, conservatism pervades and persist.
The radicals on their part pride themselves as geniuses. They baptize what the conservatives termed madness ‘change’, by so doing arrogate senility to their opposite counterpart. Infact, their so called madness is reputed among themselves as inalienable traits of a genuis, like one of their own Aristotle puts it “No great genuis is without an admixture of madness”. In the long run of romancing with their preconcept of change, they look down on the laid down structures of PEACE and CONTINUITY, with such deriding eyes they see an age long charade of deceptions. As these deceptions are being rootly nursed, attitudes are formed, new discourses are introduced, doctrines are preached, a crusade has emerged! A crusade targeted against the ideals of their conservatives counterparts. Crusades when organised are only aimed at overthrowing the status-quo and enthroning a phase of novelty.
However, to achieve this heights, the radicals also employ a somewhat deceptive justifications they ere accused the conservatives of, as Blaise Pascal had once observed “it is not only old and early impression that deceive us, the chains of novelty have the same power”. Thus, the radicals if successful in their quest to instill change, only did so by putting to practice such hypocritical iota of falsehood, and to retain their ascendancy in the realm of acceptance inturn metamorphosed to conservatives themselves, such hypocrisy is often structured to remain clandestine so much so that the reign of this new order be prolonged.
Albeit, such hypocrisy in the process of time will become lucullent enough to be exhumed by those at the receiving end of such system structure, as the one-time-aclaimed-radical-metamorphosed-conservative now at the right wing forms a parallel against the now discontent new species of left radicals, a new struggle is ensued and Hegel’s historical dialectics enjoys more truism.
This complex gridlocks of Conservatism and Radicalism explains the perenial developments and currents in the realm of the Epistemological, Socio-political, Economical and the Religious sphere of the human cosmology.
Upon the template of this metaphysical reality, we shall undertake a discourse on a socio-political phenomenon in our country in our next article titled ” When Silence Means Consent”.
