Ibo is one of the major tribes in Nigeria situated in the South-East of the country. Just like every other tribe in Nigeria, the Ibos have some distinctive mannerisms which are peculiar to them of which includes that they are very industrious and can be domineering. Also, the majority of the Ibo men marry late, that is, when in their late 30s and early 40s unlike their Yoruba and Hausa counterparts.
If you are wondering why most Ibo guys find it difficult to marry and settle down early, here are some of the reasons common to all of them:
1. The high cost of bride price in Iboland- It is believed that marriage is meant for men and not boys. Therefore, only real men who are ready and well equipped financially of course can pay the exorbitant bride price and provide all the items stipulated in the ‘bridal list’ (which includes goat, tubers of yam, clothes, etc);
2. High cost of traditional marriage- Most Ibo men keep postponing the D-day because not only is the bride price high, but also it is almost a taboo to want to marry an Ibo girl without throwing a flamboyant traditional marriage ceremony to the utmost satisfaction of the bride’s extended family;
3. Lack of good job or business- Generally, good jobs and earning sufficient income are not easy to get in Nigeria. Therefore, the guys will keep on working hard in order to be able to save enough money to marry and this may take some of them many years to do;
4. Finally, the main factor which makes most Ibo guys to marry late is that majority of Nigerian girls, especially the Ibo girls will not accept to marry any man who is not financially comfortable and stable.
Mmmh! Please the girls are not to blame. We should rather put the blame on the cultural orientation and cultural demands of the people and on the Nigerian society for not providing an enabling environment to help the guys establish themselves early and settle down when they should do so.
